When I think about taking a road trip my first thought always goes to the first road trip my sister Laura and I took without our parents, our first grown up road trip. Our parents had moved to Washington right after Laura graduated high school, while my sister and I stayed behind in California to continue our own lives. About 6 months into them being gone we were having withdraws from not seeing our family, we missed them and thought it was a great way to see the great states of Oregon and Washington! So on a whim we decided to hop into my car, which happened to be a PURPLE Kia at the time, and headed out on our first road trip together. Before we headed out we called out parents to tell them we were on our way, this was before there were cell phones so we told them we would call them when we got to our next stop and a payphone. How funny is that to think about? No cell phones, must have been the dinosaur ages! Back to the start of our trip, we started out so confident in our decision to pack up the car and go. We played all the classic car games, like the License Plate Game, the Alphabet Game, the Going on a Picnic Game, you get the point, we played a lot of car games. We were singing to the radio and cassette player, hey I told you it was before everyone had cell phones. Things were going great until about 3 hours into our 12+ hour trip, I was starting to get really tired, I was starting to fade. At the time I was the only one out of the two of us that was driving, Laura was too scared to get behind the wheel of a car. So here I am only 3 hours into the drive and I felt exhausted. I felt like I couldn't keep my head up, like it was taking everything in my to stay awake, and it was only 2 pm!! Laura started to worry, she was pumping me full of red vines to stay awake, asking me questions, rolling down the windows, everything you could think of to keep a person awake. It worked but only temporarily. It was the weirdest thing that as soon as I would start to drive I would just fall asleep. Car Narcolepsy? The seats in my car were too comfortable?

We managed to make it 3 more hours and I needed a nap, a real uninterrupted nap. We pulled over to a rest stop, we were planning on driving all the way through so a hotel room was not in the budget. The sun was starting to set so it wasn't totally dark out. I turned off the ignition, tipped my chair back and went to sleep. Laura was freaked out by all of the people passing by so she hung up blankets and clothes in the windows to give us more privacy, we must have looked ridiculous!

An hour later we were back on the road, I was feeling refreshed (sort of) and we were getting back into the road trip groove. Flash forward 2 hours and here I was tired again, no energy, head bopping, car swerving tired. NOT AGAIN. We needed to gas up the Kia and by now it was dark and we were in the middle of nowhere. We finally found a gas station at a questionable turn off, in a questionable area. If anything was going to wake me up it would be the idea that there maybe some animal or God forbid person lurking in the bushes of this out-in-the middle-of-no-where-we-could-be-killed-by-a-serial-killer-at-any-moment gas station. Laura stood watch while I got out, swiped my card, put the gas pump in and jumped back in the car as fast as I could. Then we waited. While we waited for what felt like forever for the gas to pump we sat there in silence, listening to the dead of the night. The nozzle clicked, we both jumped. I thought about just driving away and letting the gas nozzle fall out as we took off and attach the gas cap later, no issues. That could happen right? Then I thought about my car and being a starving student, if something happened to the gas tank because I was being a chicken how would I pay for it? Darn it! I needed to buck up. Laura and I listened, looked around and I got out. When I was done I jumped back in and we took off, not looking back.

Needless to say I drove the rest of the way bug eyed, freaked out and thankful we were still alive. It's so funny to think about it now, I'm sure it wasn't as bad as we thought it was. I'm sure the road wasn't as long as it seemed. I'm sure there was someone working there watching the place making sure no serial killers were in the bushes. I'm sure it was a quiet little town and not a scene from Scooby Doo with zombies and ghosts around every corner. #kiasocialclub

Trying Random Products

While I was out at Walmart over the weekend looking for a cute little San Francisco 49ers outfit I decided I would try a few random products I saw. No coupons, no sales, just wanted to try something. I always read reviews about things and wanted to grab a few needed items but ones I have not tried myself.

The Colgate in CinnaMint is great! I like to use it after a meal since it has a cinnamon flavor to it and not too much mint or fluoride taste to it. I still use other toothpaste before bed but I definitely like this as an after a meal toothpaste.

The Tone Cocoa Butter soap was vastly different than my normal soap in the way it made bubbles and cleaned but I did like how soft it made my legs feel after I shaved them. I will not use it as an everyday soap but its great for a soft feeling shave!

The Degree Girl I liked the packaging lol. Its a pink cap and a chick dancing how fun is that right! I do like this for long work days but on days off I steer towards a more natural deodorant. I feel there can be a balance of types of deodorants used.

I like trying new products. If I do not try new things how will I find things that are better suited for me. I will buy the toothpaste again but I dont think I will purchase the deodorant or soap again.

Have you tried any random new brands that did or did not work out? Id love to hear about your experience.

Halloween Treat Recipe from Save Mart

Each year as the Fall begins and October 1st arrives my family gets excited for all things Halloween. Ever since I was a little girl Halloween has been a fun time of year full of sweet treats, Halloween decor and family fun. Now that I am a Mom and have my own little trick or treater I love being able to make him Halloween themed treats. We create Halloween crafts, bake cookies, decorate and visit Halloween stores to pick out our costumes.

In the past I have found recipes for Halloween from books and magazines. Now that I have access to places like Pinterest and stores creating recipes using their own products I easily find new recipes each year for any occasion.

Since I started a new job I have been planning meals more and buying dinner a few days ahead of time. After reading the local Save Mart add with coffee in the morning I saw that chicken and turkey on sale. We planned to make turkey burgers and chicken soft tacos so we headed to Save Mart to check out the Bogo sale on Foster Farms. I also saw that peppers were on sale for our tacos. We ended up finding many items on sale and purchased more than we had on our list.

Traditionally each year we do make a recipe that includes candy corn in it, I love candy corn! This year I decided to add to the normal sweet treats we make and include one that was lighter and had fruit. Candy apples seemed fun but I wanted something even adults would enjoy. My husband is not big on super sweet treats like me so I wanted something he would enjoy too.

I found a great recipe that even included pumpkin on the Save Mart Blog.

Creamy Pumpkin Dip & Apples

1 cup canned pumpkin or fresh pumpkin puree
1 cup light cream cheese, softened
½ cup EACH marshmallow cream AND apple sauce
Ground cinnamon and/or pumpkin pie spice, to taste (few dashes)
Apple Slices

Mix all ingredients, except apple slices in medium bowl until smooth; refrigerate until serving. Serve with apple slices for dipping.

I bought a new Halloween plate earlier in the week and was excited to be able to use it for a new recipe.

The recipe from the Save Mart blog was simple to make! The scent was wonderful with the pumpkin, marshmallow and cinnamon.

We enjoyed the Creamy Pumpkin Dip and Apples treat I made after we had dinner. It was a sweet and creamy dessert. I liked that it was not overly sweet like some Halloween recipes. I think this could be a great addition to any Halloween party, especially if there will be adults as your guest.

We will be heading back to Save Mart to buy some Halloween candy to hand out to the trick or treaters we will be getting at our door. I love to see all the fun costumes kids and adults alike dress up in. I am hoping to see some great coupons in the weekly ad for making more Halloween themed treats before October is over.

Working Mama

~by Laura

I am sure some of you have noticed that I have not been blogging as much. This is because I am now a working Mom. After almost 3 years having the privilege of staying home with my son I am back in the work force. The first week was really tough, not just for my son but for me too. We both cried a lot. My heart was so broken the first day seeing my son screaming with tears rolling down his face yelling "No Mama No!" I tear up just thinking about it. I had to fight back tears as I went to work trying not to let my emotions get the best of me. I remind myself I was lucky to be home with him the first 3 years and to cherish every little moment there is when I am home.

I am not sure if I took it for granted being with him all day everyday but being away from him for 8 hours a day I count every minute until I can be back playing toys, making stuffed animals dance, painting pictures and reading him books. I swear he might have gotten taller in the few weeks I have been working. I have moments of panic where I think I am going to miss something or he will grow up in the blink of an eye and I will miss it. But I know in my heart the decision to work will enable me to make a better future for him.

In the last few weeks it has gone from tearful departures to us both being ok with a temporary separation. Yesterday when my son waved, smiled and told me "Bye Bye Mama". I blew him a kiss and knew that the day was going to be a much better one.
