Folsom Renaissance Faire Review and Giveaway #folsomrenaissancefaire #ad

*We will be #hosted at the Folsom Renaissance Faire 2018

Take a step back in time for the weekend and enjoy the 26th annual Folsom Renaissance Faire. For my family this is an annual tradition to attend and something we look forward to every Fall.

This family friendly event will be hosted at Folsom Lions Park next to the Folsom Zoo. The dates to the event are September 22-23 2018. Saturday hours are 10-6 and Sunday 10-5. Ticket prices are $16 for adults, $11 for seniors, military, ages 13-17, $8 kids 6-12 and FREE for kids under 6. Parking is $5. You can buy your tickets HERE.

We have been attending the Folsom Renaissance Faire for many years and always have a wonderful time. It is a magical journey through Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I times of lords, ladies, queens, dukes, towns people and more. My son loves all the interactive activities he can do at the festival. Games, crafts, music, dancing and 3 stages of fun all day long. Last year my son tried the Archery games with much delight in his heart as he was "just like Robin Hood". Too cute! Even my husband and I gave it a try.

One of my favorite activities is the daily parade where the queen, her court and other costumed actors walk the whole event with marching, drums and singing. The joust is my husbands favorite activity that we look forward to. Cheering on our favorite night and watching the full impact jousting event is exciting. There is even an archery tournament to watch. Many vendors have kids games areas that parents can sit down and watch the action unfold.

Last year my son had the chance to be a part of a stage show. He loved every second of it! My son said the key to being selected from the crowd was to yell "HAZZAH!" as loud as you can. It is a commonly used phrase at the faire to express joy or excitement. I treasure the experience of seeing him on stage being a part of the show.

Here is a video of the stage acting my son volunteered to be in:

The food at the festival is amazing. I laughed when I looked through our photos of our visits to realize I do not have any pictures of our food. We were so busy enjoying it I did not take pictures. The turkey legs are delicious and I highly recommend trying one!

We love all the reenactment guilds that attend the faire. They dress in time period clothing, speak in the Renaissance talk and are always interacting with attendees to make sure you are having a fun experience. In the 15 years that we have attended the event we always have a fun time and the event organizers are great at what they do.

Last year we met a falcon where his trainer showed us his amazing claws and wings. We learned to spin wool too. Not only is it family fun but also a great way to show your kids a bit of history of Elizabethan age of  England. As a homeschooling family we take this opportunity to learn about the time period grade level appropriate history before attending the event. My son loves being able to in a way "see" what he has learned about when we attend. There is also a Friends of the Folsom Library sale where we find great books to read and also support local library. Last year we found a great book on castles and one about dragons. Perfectly fitting for the event!

I highly recommend attending this family friendly event. The entertainment is delightful, the food is amazing and the actors that make it all happen are amazing. We always leave with a smile on our face and a few souvenirs to take home.

Family Fun with Rocket Fishing Rod Review and Giveaway #ad

*I was provided free items to review for this post. The opinions expressed are my own. #ad

Living in Northern California we have the privilege of so many beautiful places to go fishing. We have tried for the last few years to hone in my son's fishing skills. I can recall trips with my own Dad fishing on lakes from shore and from a boat, I treasure those memories. With my own son it has been a bit more chaotic, is it me the teacher or him the student of this sport of patience I am not sure lol. BUT I do know I have the fear of him hooking me or himself in the face or body as he casts in his wild child fashion. It makes my heart sad watching him struggle as he hooks trees as he casts backwards or when the line and rig fall to the ground when he flips the rod before casting.

This summer we saw an ad on TV as we were watching morning cartoons together for "Rocket Fishing Rod by Goliath Games". He jumped up and ran to the TV declaring this was the fishing pole he needed, even though I had just bought him a Star Wars R2D2 one. This may be one of the few times I agreed with my son that we do indeed need the item we saw on the commercial.

When the Rocket Fishing Rod arrived the whole family was excited to try it!! We started our fishing journey trying to find a new place to test out the pole. We drove to a nearby town only to discover the lake was closed and no fishing allowed. We did not let that discourage our excitement and drove to another town where my husband grew up to try a pond where he fished as a kid. We picked up my Mother in Law along the way and made it a family trip.

My husband reminisced about his childhood adventures at the park and pond as he told stories to our son. I think that is my favorite part of fishing, the time spent together and the stories shared. The biggest relief was using the Rocket Fishing Rod for my son to cast with. There was no flinging of the rod and line, no twirling around of the hook as he walked around, the hook and bait are encased in a capsule that it loaded into the rocket. So easy to use and much safer!

Not only is the Rocket Fishing Rod safer to use with kids it is literally a blast to use. We had fun taking turns loading it up and rocket launching the line into the pond. We all gave it a try and enjoyed it. Even my Mother in law had fun using it.

When you cast it, blast it with the Rocket Fishing Rod, the kids fishing rod that accurately casts its line up to 30 feet. Great for kids of all ages, because it replaces standard kids fishing poles and takes the hassle out of fishing. Just pump, launch and reel in real fish! A safety bobber keeps the hook enclosed until it hits the water, and it all but eliminates snarls and snags. Once the bobber is in the water, the lure/bait compartment opens to drop the lure/bait to the desired depth. Made with hi-tech precision engineering, the patented design and rugged ABS construction will stand up tough to outdoor use.  Recommended for ages 8 and up. More than 1 million sold.
System Content:
  • Rocket Fishing Rod
  • 1 Safety Bobber
  • 2 Hooks
  • 150 feet of 8-pound Test Fishing Line
  • 2 Line Stops
  • 1 Weight
  • Complete Instructions

We did not catch a fish this time around, it was more than likely due to us disturbing the fish with casting over and over for the fun of it. I am sure next time we can relax and leave the bobber and bait in for a while. We are looking forward to cooler Fall weather to spend the day fishing.

This is a fun toy for kids to use as an intro to fishing. My son would get frustrated and a tad bored with the requirements of regular fishing. I think in time he can have back his classic rod and reel but for now I love seeing him smile as he is blasting and reeling in with his Rocket Rod. We are building positive memories that we can all enjoy!

Usborne Books Astronaut Academy Review and Giveaway

*I received books for free to review for this post.

Books are a very important part of my life! I was raised with a love a books and the library. I now encourage my own son to love reading and I am always buying him new books. As a homeschooling family we try to find educational books that make learning about a topic more fun. My friend Waiyee has introduced me to Usborne Books as a resource for schooling and fun reading.

We recently reviewed Astronaut Academy as a part of learning about space and the planets for school. My son and I both loved the interactive aspects of the book with being able to write in the book and some parts being punch out to make things with. With each page there is a new task that your little astronaut in training learns. As you make your way through the tasks you add an official sticker to the page, once you complete all the tasks you earn a certificate.

Here is some information about the book from Usborne Books website:

"An activity book like no other! Through a series of fun and challenging tasks, kids will begin to understand the skills and training required to become an astronaut on a mission to Mars. There are “classes” for kids to attend as part of their training. These include Space Pilot, Space Living, Space Engineer, Space Scientist, and Space Gym. Each topic is explored in detail and accompanied by astronaut missions, including physical and mental challenges, as well as drawing and craft activities designed to mimic the skills involved in real-life training. Kids will tackle hand-eye coordination exercises and obstacle courses and learn how to build a balloon rocket, as well as first aid skills. There are also stickers, a poster, and a model space shuttle."

My son really loved this book and wanted to keep going with the tasks. Our favorite one was making the Balloon Rocket! We still have it up in his room for times when we want to launch it. There is a board game style game that you can take out of the book to play called "Mission to Mars". We enjoyed playing it and my son made a box for the game to add to his other board games he owns.

Waiyee hosts Online Book Parties to share the love of reading and books with your friends. We are offering a special of free and half priced books when you use the code "Frugal Family Tree" when you contact her  to host an online party at waiyee.usbornebooks@gmail.com

Handmade Jewelry from Around the World: Novica Review and Giveaway #handmade4life

*I was provided complimentary items to review for this post. The opinions expressed are my own.

I have enjoyed Novica products for a few years now and I always love to support their artist with my purchases. I like that Novica is a company that brings together artist from all over the world to be able to sell their products online. I have many great products from Novica that are from Mexico including jewelry and kitchenware. This time shopping I wanted to try a different region of the world for my jewelry. I found an artist in Thailand that had beautiful jewelry, great reviews and sterling silver. I have sensitive skin and have to purchase silver or gold jewelry. Her pieces are affordable and light weight. I wear jewelry to work everyday and I am constantly needing new pieces to wear.

I had a hard time selecting which pieces to select for my review since Aoy has many beautiful items. I wear my hair down often at work so I decided on a pair of dangle earrings, Handcrafted Sterling Silver Dangle Earrings with Spirals Whirl. I love the movement of the silver balls and the whimsy of the spiral. They are very lightweight, somewhat delicate making them easy to wear for a full work day. They are very cheerful to wear and I enjoying sharing that I found them on Novica.

I have learned over the years necklaces for me have to be versatile. I have a few necklaces I have only wore a few times because they are so very specific in their style and I knew this time I needed to make a more practical choice. I wanted to have another piece of jewelry from Aoy in Thailand so I selected the Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace, Filigree Moon. I have received many compliments from my customers at work on the filigree motifs in my crescent moon necklace. I like that the pendant feels sturdy and well made, the ball chain is a bit fragile but I have other chains I can put the moon on if I need to.

My jewelry was handmade by a woman from Thailand who is lovingly called Aoy. Here is some information on the artist:

"At our workshop, we still work with our hands to craft our jewelry collections, because we believe it is our duty to preserve this ancient art form."
"Sawasdee ka! My name is Rudklow Patanaanunwong, but everyone calls me Aoy. I come from a warm family environment from Bangkok, though I am an only child. I hold Bachelor and Master Degrees in Economy from Northeastern University."

"My intention after graduation was to work for the Bank of Thailand, but I changed my mind when I met my husband. We got married and I moved to Chiang Mai, where my husband has a silversmith workshop. I began to work there to help him."

I am happy to share that we are hosting a giveaway for a $35 Gift Code to Novica.com for one lucky reader. There are so many great items at Novica, more than jewelry there are gifts, housewares, clothing, bags, art and more.

National Geographic Kids The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines Review and Giveaway #natgeokids #momsmeet

Disclaimer: I received this product for free from Moms Meet (momsmeet.com), May Media Group LLC, who received it directly from the manufacturer. As a Moms Meet blogger, I agree to use this product and post my honest opinion on my blog. The opinions posted are my own.

National Geographic Kids The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines have been wonderful additions to our home library. Being a homeschool family these are a valuable resource to us for facts and info that can lead to more learning. I am big on book learning first then using the internet to further explore on ideas. Books in hand make a difference for me and my family. I grew up in a house full of books and am grateful for it.

The Book of Heroes has been my son's favorite. My son loves to read about the men who have shaped the world and imagine himself as his own version of a hero. They even have a section on courageous kids to inspire little ones. This book has sparked his interest in learning more about people making a difference right now and in the past who have made the world better. I love reading this with him. We did not read the book cover to cover but instead have been skipping around chapters letting him pick what we discuss. The books include people from history and others that are also very relevant with current events. The layout of the book and colorful images really help keep kids interested.

My son had a few favorite parts of The Book of Heroes including Chapter 3: Game Changers. It is about men in sports, he loved this chapter. The inspiring stories of athletes such as Jessie Owens, Jim Abbott, Michael Jordan and Tony Hawk were fun to read. Inspiring Minds, Chapter 7, has been my son's top favorite chapter. He loves science and space. The list of 5 great geeks included his favorite game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who created Mario. Heroes of mythology, legends like Robin Hood and King Arthur, heroes in movies like Harry Potter and Star Wars, the book is full of so many diverse categories and people.

Topics on political heroes, human rights leaders, so many interesting facts and other people I had not heard of like the story of Chiune Sugihara a worker at the Japanese consulate in Lithuania during World War 2 who made thousands of visas for refugees to flee from Europe. I am a huge history lover and I loved reading the short stories of everyday people being heroes.

I liked how The Book on Heroes mentions notable women heroines in history as did The Book of Heroines mention men in the book too. A good blend of historical facts from men and women. Even heroic animal stories are shared in both of the books. My son loved the animal stories so much!

The Book of Heroines was fabulous to me, I wish I would have owned a book like this as a little girl. To see how influential and world changing some women can be is inspiring. My son was not as interested in the "girl book" as he put it, but at 7 years old I would expect him to be in his girls are silly stage. He did however enjoy me sharing some of the cool stories and pictures with him from the ones I selected to read.

He recognized Wonder Woman, Hermione Granger aka Emma Watson, Mulan, Oprah and a few other women and their stories but after reading the book I know there are so many other stories to share with him. Since he likes sports he thought Chapter 2 Gritty Girls was cool. He recognized the Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky from the Rio games we watched over the summer.

Heroes for Hire and Heroines on the Job were both chapters on heroes in the work force and were perfect chapters to read for our Social Studies work for the week. We have been learning about workers in the community and the difference of services and goods. It was great to have outside source book that was fun and on topic from what we were leaning that week. I have a few others chapters planned to use as an aid to our school learning.

National Geographic Kids The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines are for sale at Barnes & Noble, Books a Million and at National Geographic Store. They would make a perfect Christmas present for the kids in your life. My son loves them and so do I. The facts and stories shared are fascinating and a part of all of our history. In our family a hero is someone who stands up for what is right and makes decisions based on love My son looks up to my husband as his first hero and I could not be more happy about that!

According to the book the world has many meanings and many people can be called heroes in real life or fiction, in these books, heroes tend to share:

7 stupendous qualities:

• Heroes are courageous

• Heroes do the right thing

• Heroes have compassion

• Heroes are competent

• Heroes are inspiring

• Heroes never quit

• Heroes leap to action

National Geographic Kids is a great source of knowledge for your family. You can visit their website for games, videos, fun facts and more.

Turkey Pumpkin Sliders for Game Day Dinner and Giveaway #FosterFarmsGameday

* I was sent product coupons for my recipe. All opinions expressed are my own.

I must admit I am a bit of a bandwagon kinda gal when it comes to football. I know this may cause some die hard fans to gasp but I am a football fan and that is all that matters to me. I like to root for many teams and have a favorite of the 2 teams that are currently playing each time. I will always root for home teams near me out of loyalty to my area of course first. This time of year we like to watch college football sometimes more than NFL since it is people in school earning degrees and doing sports I find it an inspiration to my son to watch

A big part of football watching for many families is the food they eat during the game. There are many go to recipes for burgers, wings and dips that are traditional at a game day gathering. I wanted to try something a little more Fall inspired for my burgers this time. I found inspiration in one of my favorite Fall treats pumpkin spice! I added onions and pickles to help balance the sweetness of pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice.

Turkey Pumpkin Sliders Recipe

1 lb. Foster Farms Ground Turkey
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/2 cup diced red onions
1/2 cup diced dill pickles
1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
dash of salt and pepper

Directions:
Combined all ingredients in a bowl. Form into small round patties. Place in pan to bake in oven at 350 degrees F. for approximately 30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F. Your oven may vary on time. Allow to slightly cool and add toppings per guest taste.

Serving sliders at a Game Day gathering makes it easy to grab and eat while still sitting on the couch and watching the game. I serve two at a time to my family and let them add the toppings they like. I enjoy cooking with Ground Turkey for the lower fat content and variety of ways I can use it in everyday recipes. Foster Farms Simply Raised Ground Turkey is 100% natural*, California-grown with no added hormones, steroids or antibiotics ever. Visit fosterfarms.com for delicious and easy party meal ideas.

Enter The Oroweat® Bread 2016 America's Better Sandwich Contest and A Giveaway

The coupons for product redemption, information, and gift card have been provided by Oroweat® Bread for this post. The opinions expressed in this post are my own and do not reflect the opinions of Oroweat® Bread. #Ad

My family and I love sandwiches, and I bet I made thousands of them while my five kids were growing up. Whether for lunch or dinner, everyone enjoys a great tasting sandwich, and egg salad is definitely a favorite in my house.

Of course what you put inside the sandwich is important, but so is the bread. For me, the bread has to be fresh and delicious. That's why Oroweat® Bread has been a staple in my house for decades. I can count on Oroweat® to be great tasting, offer plenty of variety to choose from, and nutritious.

Now that I'm a grandmother of four fabulous grandchildren, I find I'm still making sandwiches for this next generation. We do have a couple of picky eaters, but luckily they all love sandwiches and it's a simple thing to make them whenever we get hungry.

For these egg salad sandwiches, I used the Oroweat® Honey Wheat Bread. It's actually a delicious bread that I also use for toast and French toast, and it has a tang of sweetness to it because of the honey in it.

Since what we eat becomes more and more important to me, I feel good about choosing a bread that meets what I feel is a standard of quality. And I like that there are so many kinds to choose from, each with the goodness and great taste that I've come to expect.

Oroweat® Whole Grains Sliced Breads and Oroweat® Sandwich Thin Rolls contain 2 to 5 grams of fiber per slice or thin, have zero grams of trans fat, and are cholesterol free. They also contain no high fructose corn syrup, something which we always try to avoid.

Making these egg salad sandwiches are super easy, and even the kids will eat them with the tomatoes and spinach. I always offer veggies whenever possible to my grandkids, and try to set a good example by eating them myself. And it often works!

Here's how I make my version of egg salad sandwiches. Feel free to add or subtract the chopped pickles if you like. This recipe will make 6 sandwiches.

Ingredients:

1 dozen hard boiled eggs, peeled
1 cup mayonnaise ( or add or subtract amount to your liking)
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
2 sweet pickles, diced
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tomatoes, sliced
spinach
12 slices Oroweat® Honey Wheat Bread

Mash the peeled eggs in a medium bowl. Add mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, and salt to eggs. Mix together well. Layer the tomatoes and spinach on one side of the bread.
Spread the egg salad on the other piece of bread and put together.

Oroweat® Bread is hosting their 2016 America's Better Sandwich Contest and you can enter to win a $5,000 prize.

This year's contest includes 5 exciting sandwich categories including, Open Faced Artistry, Breakfast In Bed, Creative Classics, Fueling Good, and State Favorites.

The recipe in each sandwich category with the highest score will receive a $5000 category prize.

Before entering an original better sandwich, entrants should make sure their recipes include any of the Oroweat® Sliced Breads, including any of the Oroweat® Sandwich Thins® Rolls varieties.

Entries will be accepted June 15th - August 21st, online consumer voting will take place September 26th - October 23rd, and the winners will be announced on National Sandwich Day- November 3rd.

*The information, gift card, gift pack and giveaway have been provided to me by Hard Rock International.

San Francisco here we come!! Hard Rock Cafe has launched their 2016 World Burger Tour for Northern America. I am definitely a burger fan and after looking over the menu I am not sure which one I will select to eat when we visit for Mother's Day. I may order the Java Lava Burger since I do love Seattle or the Tango Salsa Burger since I have not eaten a burger with a fried egg on it before. I am thinking I will have everyone in our family select a different burger so we can taste a few of them. The menu has a time limit on it as how long the burgers will be available so be sure to visit before June 30, 2016.

Hard Rock World Burger Tour

·         Hard Rock Cafe locations in North America are celebrating the start of burger season with a menu showcasing international Local Legendary™ Burgers

·         The limited-time World Burger Tour menu is available Sunday, May 1 through Thursday, June 30, 2016

Hard Rock gives chefs at their cafes the freedom to create a unique Local Legendary Burger that captures the flavors of their city. This year more than 160 local burgers were evaluated by Hard Rock’s culinary team with fan favorites selected to headline the World Burger Tour menu. This four-stop, once-in-a-lifetime excursion celebrates the cities that inspired Hard Rock’s World Burger Tour. The World Burger Tour travel package is a private, 10-night trip that includes flights, first class hotel accommodations, ground transportation and exclusive dining and music experiences at Hard Rock Cafe locations in each city not typically available to the public
Have you eaten at a Hard Rock Cafe before? What is your favorite Burger there? I will be posting our review of the San Francisco Hard Rock Cafe location later in the month.
