FANtastic Day at Sacramento Fandemic Tour #hosted #fandemictour #Sacramento

*We were hosted at the event in exchange tickets. My opinions in this post are my own. #hosted #fandemictour

We had such a FANtastic time at the first ever Sacramento Fandemic Tour! Cheesy to say I know but it is true. We attended on a Sunday, which was the last day, not as many cosplayers and other things going on but I took my 8 year old and my 68 year old mother in law so it was perfect for them. We saw many of our favorite characters like these awesome Storm Troopers and even R2D2 rolling around.

Demanding the prices we wanted to pay! LOL
My son has been to a few more conventions than I have and he knew exactly how to have fun. He dressed up as one of his favorite characters and interacted with the vendors and other cosplayers. We saw so many great items for sale at the booths. From comics, collectible toys, Funko Pops (our favorite to collect) and even comic book themed shoes. The unique items you will find is part of the adventure of checking out all the booths.

One of the best parts of Fandemic Tour was meeting legendary artists that have brought to life so many loved characters. My son is a writer and illustrator of his own comic book series and these people are inspiration for him. I love being able to encourage his creativity and have him see art can be a profession if he chooses to do so.

This photo right here was so awesome for me!!! My husband and son have met Phil Ortiz from The Simpsons and have some signed art from him that is on the wall of our living room. I have been a bit envious that I had not met him. On Sunday I had the opportunity and we shared a personal conversation of just he and I for about 15 minutes discussing my admiration for his work, things about my personal story of love for The Simpsons and where will he be next so we can get a family portrait done where he makes us "Simpson" style. He was even so sweet to ask as to why I was limping, I am suffering with health issues currently and his concern was genuine, such a nice guy!

I had planned on staying all day and waiting in line for some photo ops with my favorite The Walking Dead actors but had to leave after only being there for couple hours. My health issues were bothering me so much I could no longer walk around definitely could not stand in long lines waiting for photos. It was sad to have to leave early but we certainly had an amazing time while we were there. We did see Chandler Riggs aka Carl Grimes at his booth. He was texting on his phone and as we walked by my son yelled "Coral!" we all started cracking up and Chandler did look up for a second. The funniest part is my son has never seen The Walking Dead but he constantly hears my husband and I discussing it and apparently even picked up on the "Coral" jokes we make.

Krypto the Superdog is the next Funko POP my son has on his must have list.

My son had been saving his allowance for a few months preparing for Fandemic Tour shopping. He has a huge collection of Funko Pops and knew of a few he wanted to add to his collection while we were there. Buying an item for a collection at a convention is awesome because you will have the memories of the event attached to the item, a story of "this one I got at Fandemic Tour very first show in Sacramento". He purchased Jetsons Astro Dog and Baby Hercules. He was smiling ear to ear as we left the show with his new items to add to the shelf in his room.

If you missed the Sacramento Fandemic Tour don't fret they will be heading to Houston on September 14, 15 and 16 2018.

You can check out the photos and videos of the fun had at the #Sacramento event and the journey to Houston on Fandemic Tour Instagram and Twitter. Use hashtag #FandemicTour to find the best stuff.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Fall Season Fun #discoverykingdom

* We received complimentary tickets to attend for our visit. All opinions expressed are my own.

To celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary this Fall my husband and I decided to take our son to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom to celebrate. What a better way to celebrate our family than a fun day at a theme park all together.

My husband and I have been going to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for about 19 years now. We have created countless lasting memories as a couple and as parents on our visits to the park. We have have taken many family members over the years as guest to share our love of the park with them. It has changed so much over the years and has become more and more exciting.

My family and I enjoy the animal exhibits the most at Discovery Kingdom. Being able to see wild animals up close and open the door to learning is to me a wonderful thing. The Shark Experience is my favorite animal encounter. Walking through the underwater tunnel with sharks, sting rays and fish swimming above you amazes me every time I see it. It leaves me in awe of the beauty of sea life. My son loves seeing the sharks up close. He will stand there for as long as we let him just watching the sharks float all around as the fish go darting by.

The Dolphin Show is a must see for us, we ran from one side of the park to the other to get to the last showing of Drench!. The theme of the dolphin show has changed over the years and it has been memorable to see the creative ideas they have. It is amazing to see the dolphins jump through the air and splash the crowd sitting close. I still have it on my list of must do things to swim with a dolphin. I am hoping next year I can accomplish that!

One of my favorite things we did for this visit was the Elephant Ride we all took together as a family. My son was so excited and I must admit I was a bit nervous. I nervously chatted with the elephant trainer for our walk, I did learn a lot but wish I would have relaxed and enjoyed it like my son and husband had. Our picture did not turn out nice enough to buy, none of us were looking in the right direction at the same time. It was a very cool moment to pet an elephant and experience a ride.

Our trip would not be complete without a trip to the Butterfly Habitat. This is another exhibit that no matter how many times I have seen it, its never the same and I always enjoy the experience. I love to sit at the bench near the waterfall and see all of the colorful butterflies all around us. It is like being in a fairyland garden.

I love going to the park in the Fall when the temperatures are cooler and the crowds not as big as the summer. I can get hot coffee to enjoy, my son can wear long sleeves and I even wore jeans. I really do enjoy the Fall at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom the most.

We had a wonderful time as a family enjoying the park and all it has to offer. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is a great local getaway in Northern California to take the family to on a weekend. Right now they are having special deals for season passes for 2017 that include this year 2016 Fright Fest and Holiday in the Park.

They are open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in October for Fright Fest. During the day the park is family friendly and the Halloween decor adds to the fall fun. But as I have said before the night time during Fright Fest is a bit spooky and little ones may get scared. We usually leave before the spooky stuff starts to happen when we have attended Fright Fest and still have a wonderful time.

In November they are open on weekends and the 25th starts Holiday in the Park. You can follow Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for park updates, ticket specials and fun events on Instagram and Facebook.

Usborne Passport to Adventure Summer Reading Club for Local Sacramento & Roseville Moms

My whole family has a love for books and reading. My son and I love to spend time reading books and making up stories of our own. With school out for summer vacation it is always nice to find creative ways to encourage summer reading. I was talking to a local Mom about summer reading and found out she is working with a few local Sacramento Charities and Usborne Books to promote not only summer reading but kids helping out other kids in need. I am not affiliated with Usborne Books but thought I would love to share what another local Mom is doing in our community.

It started June 6th but anyone who joins now can do it for a 10 day period up until June 29th and read for a minimum 200 minutes.

Here is some info on her Reading Club:

Join the Usborne Summer Reading Club!

During the summer it’s easy to let literacy and education fall to the side. Almost, all kids fall behind on their reading skills every summer, which can put them farther behind when the new school year starts.

The Passport to Adventure Summer Reading Club is designed to not only give the child rewards for their reading, but provides them an opportunity to give back to their community. It is open to children of all ages, including non-readers who are being read to.

This free program is being run by Waiyee Poon Jones and Ranin Zubi, Educational Consultants with Usborne Books & More. Local to Folsom and Sacramento we are working with charitable organizations in our area to provide books to children in need.

Readers will gather pledges for their reading. One part of the pledge goes back to the child in the form of books (of their choosing) and the other part will be donated to the selected charities. Once they sign up we provide the printables including pledge tracker and reading log.

People can ask for pledges how they like but we try to keep it simple with just a total pledge for completing the minimum (which is 300 mins over the 3 week period). The kids get 50% of the pledges and the other 50% is donated books.

The charities we are working with are 1) The Mustard Seed School 2) The Children’s Receiving Home of Sacramento and 3) Love, Talk, Read 4) A charity of their choice which we can contact on their behalf.

Sign Up ASAP on this form below to get involved in this great reading event.

The Voice Auditions and Chadd Perry: You Can Help!

Nothing can bring me to an emotional place of happy, sad, excited or even tears like music. I feel music is in the soul of us all and when my dear friend at work told me her daughter Cara, who I also worked with before, that her son in law Chadd was going to be auditioning for The Voice I squealed with joy. I have heard recordings of Chadd and Cara singing and its beautiful! I knew I wanted to do my part to help spread the word about Chadd's efforts to get to the audition in L.A. Chadd and Cara are expecting a baby and have started an Indiegogo campaign to help him get there.

You can check it out here to donate

I find it exciting to believe in someones dream along with them and I thank you for any amount you can donate to send Chadd to The Voice auditions. With his talents, love of his family and a little help from the community I am hoping we will get to see him on the show.

Here is a bio of Chadd and how his love of music has been a life long pursuit:

Chadd was born in Florida and lived there until his parents moved with him to California. He grew up in a musical family, with his parents being founding members of a copycat band themselves. His nights were spent listening to endless choruses of Fleetwood Mac, Doobie Brothers, James Taylor and Cindi Lauper… It wasn’t until he was in his late teens that he began to enjoy singing himself. Even though he grew up with Classic Rock, Folk and Pop, he found something meaningful in the lyrics of Country music.

In his early singing career he devoted his time to singing Travis Tritt, Randy Travis, and his favorite, Garth Brooks. Although he enjoyed singing and enjoyed mimicking his favorite artists, his first form of validation for his passion came when he was in his early 20’s and was out with friends singing karaoke at a local dinner house and lounge. After singing “The Dance” by Garth Brooks, he was approached by an elderly couple whom had just attended their sons Funeral and Wake. With tears in their eyes they let him know that Garth was their sons favorite and that they had played that very song earlier that day at his Funeral. They claimed that they could imagine their son, boots up, head back and singing along with me at the top of his lungs! The ability to affect people so profoundly made a fundamental change in Chadd. No longer was he content with singing karaoke a couple nights a month while out with buddies! He wanted a career singing! Performing up on stage!

As life carried on, and bills began to amass, he quickly realized how difficult it would be to follow his dreams and still enjoy a roof over his head, food in the refrigerator, a running vehicle and all the other amenities that come from working a job where you actually get paid! Quickly a career in music began to fade into a dream.  He continued to sing karaoke and local singing competitions while mainly working construction. When he was in his late 20’s he began singing with a local band at The Valencia Club in Penryn as a walk on artist.

After several years singing with talented, and in some instances famous people, Chadd decided to take a leap and embark on an adventure to Nashville, TN to pursue his dream to get a recording contract. He quit his job, sold all of his belongings and took the 2,300 mile trip driving a 1967 Mustang packed with everything he owned; a computer, his clothes, $5,000 and three guitars that he really couldn’t play.

The drummer for his band back home, Biff Adam, was Merle Haggard’s drummer for the past fifty some odd years and one of the original Strangers band members. The guitar player, and leader of the band, Jim Baughman, was a guitar prodigy and had his own list of musical milestones, including being a studio musician in Nashville, a traveling musician, playing guitar for Merle Haggard, being great friends with Chet Atkins in the early 70’s and opening on the Grand Ole Opry before he was a teen! Between the two legends of country music, they sent Chadd to Nashville with several pages of names, addresses and phone numbers of several influential people in the music scene to help him get a foot in the door. Whether it be for fear of failure… Fear of success… Or plain stubborn pride, Chadd never called a number. He never visited an address. He never knocked on any doors. Instead he began doing what he knew best and hooked up with a local building contractor and began working 90 plus hours a week.

At the age of 33, with a long distance relationship on the rocks, he took a “vacation” back to California, and never returned to Nashville… He did begin playing fulltime with his old band mates and in the evenings played as the “house” band at the Valencia Club for almost 8 years. During this time he met Cara and the two became friends. Most nights she would get up with the band and belt out a powerful song or two then disappear back into the crowd.

Personal loss of family members for some of the band spelled a noticeable decline in desire to continue with the late nights and an eventual demise of the band altogether. They occasionally still perform together, but only a few times a year which left an open hole in Chadd’s desire to sing.

After a failed long term relationship, Chadd spent a year traveling and working long hours with no interest in music or company. He would travel with his 130 pound German Shepherd and constant companion, Thor, with  4 or 5 nights a week spent in hotels while working all across California, Utah, Arizona and Washington. At one point a tally of his consecutive days worked reached 183.

Due to conflicting scheduling and missing parts for a jobsite, Chadd had an unusual week off and took the opportunity to reach out to an old friend to do some singing. Having sung with her on stage, and sung against her in singing competitions, he couldn’t think of anyone better than Cara.

After meeting at a local pizza parlor (which Chadd was late showing up for) where his old guitar player was hosting karaoke,  and seeing each other for the first time in over a year, they fell into a familiar pattern of singing together and reminisced about days in the past… They agreed to get together again and made tentative plans for dinner… Both promising “soon.” Holding to their plans, “soon” came fairly quickly and they set a day for dinner out, and although they were just old friends, Chadd was uncharacteristically nervous about their impending date and even took refuge in the wisdom of a close friend whom he called on the drive to pick her up in an attempt to bolster his courage.

Throughout dinner, and the Sake they had to hide their obvious nervousness, they talked of the past. They talked about where their lives had led them to this point… And Briefly they talked of the future. They both left their date with unexpected attraction and unwanted desire for more. Up to this point they mistakenly believed they had a firm grasp on their lives, and neither would admit that something was missing. Both were content to be miserable in their isolation… And they both were wrong.

They both enjoyed their date, and Chadd found a local Flower Shop that would order something special… Something exotic… Something expensive!!!... So after a couple visits looking for that special flower he found the one… Ordered it… And created a card from a “secret admirer” to send with the flowers to her place of work… The flowers were a surprise, but not NEARLY as surprising as Cara’s reaction!... Without warning, she simply… Disappeared!

After some time, and with much apology, Cara sought him out. With explanations of confusion and fear, she agreed to date again… After several months of dating, it was obvious that each of their experiences with failed relationships  had given them a finite view of what they wanted from a relationship. They found a quite comfort in how they interacted in each others lives… Fast forward two years later… And a blended family of one boy, one girl, one man, one woman, two lizards, one rat, and two dogs…. Chadd remembers those fateful words from Cara extolling “Houston! We have a problem!” that signaled the sign that another baby was on the way… And all of a sudden, almost 8 months later, Chadd comes to the realization that he never would have thought he could love anything as much as he loved music… Until now… This family. His family. THEIR family!

Through discussions about not going… Not spending the money… Not taking the time away from the family… Not traveling so far, so close to her due date, Chadd realized that he ultimately had no say in the matter, and his audition date for The Voice television show was scheduled. Now, just a few weeks away from his audition he realizes several truths:

He’s not in his 20’s any longer… Not his 30’s… Not even FORTY! He’s the ripe old age of 43… He’s not been singing PROFESSIONALLY for a couple years… He spends more time swinging a hammer than he ever does playing his guitars… And no matter how much he complains… Or argues… Or tries to find a way out… He’s on his way to Los Angeles...
