TerraCycle Garden Products Review and Giveaway

For our Moms Who Mow event Terra Cycle wanted to share their recycled products that are great for gardening. I love the products from Terra Cycle we even have a back pack made of recycled billboard! The idea of recycling old packaging and stuff to make new things is awesome and so very frugal!

We had the chance to review some of the Gardening products made by TerraCycle for the event. We reviewed the Recycled Plastic Hanging Planter and the StonyField Farms Children's Vegetable Grow Kit.

The Hanging Planter and Veggie Grow Kit

My plan was to plant the veggie seeds in the hanging planter so the cats that live near by would not mess with the planter. It worked too! The tomatoes seeds have not yet made a stalk but I know they are on their way.

The planter was easy to set up and hang by our front door. The vegetable grow kit was a fun thing to do with my son. He could only watch but he sat in his outdoor chair and I explained to him what we were doing. He smiled away eating his snacks as he watched me. The grow kit is simple to use. You just tear off pieces of the packaging that contain the seeds in it and plant into the yogurt cups filled with soil and worm compost. How cool is that!

Filled the hanging planter with the packaging that contains seeds.

We planted seeds in the yogurt cups too

I take my son outside to water the plant daily and he smiles as I explain to him that we give it water to make it grow. He says juice sometimes when we use the water which makes me laugh since all liquids other than milk in a bottle are juice to him. I can't wait until we see the plant start to grow and then eat the tomatoes from the plant. I find growing plants that provide food so rewarding.

Hanging by the front door waiting to grow

They also have a really cool Recycled Plastic Hexagonal Picnic table that looks great! Its on my wish list!

Imperial Toy Little Tikes Bubble Leaf and Lawn Blower Review and Giveaway

As a Mom Who Mows I like a nice looking yard but what I like even more is when I can have fun with my son while I work on the yard. We recently had the opportunity to review the Imperial Toy Little Tikes Bubble Leaf and Lawn Blower for our event. We had a blast with it! At first I could not get it to make bubbles but then I realized I had not filled up the blower with enough bubbles. After we filled it up it was bubble mayhem and so much fun!

Cleaning up the yard with his Lawn and Leaf Blower

When my son realized it made bubbles he grabbed it from me and ran off. It was cute to watch him use the Leaf Blower like mom does. He was making sound effects for it as he "cleaned up" the yard. Even the neighbors commented on how cute he looked out there in the yard helping his Mama.
After he had fun with it he handed back to me and wanted me to do it. I think he wants to know if I think something is fun too. He has realized I am the coolest person he knows lol. I held the Bubble Leaf and Lawn Blower above my head and made it rain down bubbles onto us. He giggled with excitement and ran all over the yard with his mouth open to catch the bubbles. We have to work on the part about eating the bubbles but we were having a great time.

We have even taken it up to the park so he could run all over the fields there using his Leaf and Lawn Bubble Blower to clean up the park. The only improvement or tip I have to share is to let off the trigger every minute or so to keep the bubbles flowing. Otherwise its like its blowing too much and it will not make a big amount of bubbles. My son got the hang of it after a bit.

Little Tikes Garden Bubble Leaf and Lawn Blower Product info:
Imperial Toy introduces the new Little Tikes Garden Grow product line for Spring 2011. Driving the Garden Grow line is the battery operated Garden Bubble Leaf and Lawn Blower that blows tons of bubbles and makes real revving sounds with every simple squeeze of the trigger. The clear window on the side conveniently allows kids to see when it's time for a refill at which time is poured into an easily accessible opening on top of the blower. With its realistic look and feel of daddy’s yard blower, the Garden Bubble Leaf and Lawn Blower not only supplies kids with endless hours of fun, but may help them to learn the value of grown up chores, and build confidence in the act of doing a good job. Little Tikes Bubble Solution is included.

Pizza Garden from HGTV

I am not an expert when it comes to lawn and garden but I do my best to make it great. There are a ton of tips, plans and help on the internet to use for making your lawn and garden great. I use HGTV for many things when it comes to my yard. I recently found a really cool "Pizza Garden" that I wanted to share with everyone. It looks fun to do. We are pizza fanatics around here so this would be a great garden to have.

Materials Needed:

  • a sunny spot in the yard with well-drained soil
  • edging for "pizza" outline (metal, plastic or wood)
  • seedlings of your favorite toppings: tomato, bell pepper, chives (or onions), rosemary, basil, oregano, parsley
  • compost
  • water
The rest of the instructions for the Pizza Garden are on the HGTV website. I also found there more Kid-Friendly Garden projects. I look forward to being able to do projects like those when my son is a bit older.

Do you Garden? What do you grow? If you don't have a garden what would you grow if you could?

Wells Lamont Lawn and Garden Gloves Review and Giveaway

Since I am the Mom who Mows in our house I need the essentials to get my tasks done right and with still keeping my feminine feel to me. When I first decided to be more frugal by doing the yard work myself instead of paying to have it done I noticed how rough and blistered my hands would get after a weekend of yard work. It made me sad that my soft hands were getting beat up. I had a pair of old garden gloves that I got years ago but they were for men. The mens gloves were too big and bulky for me to use correctly.

For the Moms Who Mow event I was able to review 3 of the gloves made by Wells Lamont. I loved the look and feel of them all.

Blister Armor

The last few times I have mowed the lawn I have used my new Wells Lamont Blister Armor gloves. One of my biggest complaints about lawn mowing is the blisters it left and my hands so I was excited to try these ones. They were very comfortable to wear and worked! My hands did not get the normal blisters I would get so I am definitely going to be buying more of these when I need some.

Blister Armor gloves in action!

Product Description from the site:
Women's synthetic leather glove featuring Blister Armor™  LiquiCell®  glove technology.  A liquid membrane is positioned on the palm and thumb creating a synthetic blister.  This prevents actual blisters and next day soreness!  Sewn with nylon thread - seams last longer. Machine washable synthetic leather provides great dexterity and comfort, yet gives you the wear that you need.  Stretch fabric back for comfort and better fit.

Ultra Comfort Suede Leather

We have two big trees in our front yard that are constantly making small tree branches fall onto the lawn. I gather them up and need to break them to stuff them into the green waste bin and some I strip of the leafs to give to the dog to fetch. This makes me need a good durable pair of gloves that can handle the tough branches. The Ultra Comfort Suede Leather Slim Fit gloves were perfect for this. I am a wimp when it comes to being poked or injured when doing yard work so these were perfect for me to clean up the branches and not get my hands injured. I once used mittens to do this and it was a silly and painfully experience.

Product Description:
Women's suede cowhide leather for heavy duty wear.  Stretch back for comfort and better fit.   Comfort Closure™ adjustable wrist for a custom fit keeps out debris.

Ultra Comfort Synthetic Leather

Yard work also lends itself to home maintenance for the outside. This usually involves the use of power tools for me. Recently we had a dog move in next door and I was worried about some of the small holes in the fence. My solution to keep the dog away from my own dog and my son was to cut small pieces of wood and screw them into the fence. It seems to work perfectly. Now the other dog is safe on his side and us safe on our side. Thankfully I had my Ultra Comfort Synthetic Leather Gloves for the job. They helped me grip the power drill better than I ever have. I worry about it slipping out of my hands since they get a bit sweaty in the summer heat working on stuff. Plus they were purple, one of my favorite colors so I looked pretty while using my power tools too!

I also wanted to share a bit of info about the company that I thought was great!

Wells Lamont has worked with international hunger relief organization Feed The Children since 1993, providing thousands of gloves annually to help in the many cleanup efforts Feed The Children is involved with. This includes 42,595 pairs of leather gloves donated to assist with the earthquake disaster relief in Haiti among other efforts.

My Yard Work Assistant

I have always been the one that has mowed the lawn, pulled weeds, tended to the garden and been the poop scooper lol. I do it lovingly since I feel blessed to have a yard to mow, a garden to eat from and a dog to play with. I laughed the other day thinking when my son is bigger I will have a yard work assistant. I have already planned out the chores he can do as he gets older.

For now I will enjoy him watching me from the window or following me around in the back yard as I pull weeds. He thinks he is a big boy and the other day when it oddly rained again in June we went in the backyard to replant some veggies and he had a blast playing with the pots and dirt.

What types of outdoor chores do your kids do and what age did they start doing it?

SmartPond Fountain Pump with Low-Water Shut-Off and Light Giveaway

For any back yard enthusiast to create a calming oasis a water feature is perfect. When I had the chance to host a giveaway for a fountain pump I was excited to be sharing such a cool one like this SmartPond Low Water Shut Off and Light. The "smart pump" technology allows the pump to shut-off when the water level becomes too low and automatically resumes pumping when water is refilled to the appropriate level. Different from standard pond pumps since it creates aeration and movement so bugs like mosquitoes are not attracted to it.

This SmartPond pump is available exclusively at Lowe's stores.

o Ideal for small to medium fountains
o New technology monitors water levels
o Long-lasting due to elimination of pump burn-out
o Energy efficient
o 16 ft cord
o UL certified

The site has a helpful section called The Smart Approach to help you build an in-ground pond with specs and even a video.  Here is a fountain project for a two tiered fountain using the pump you can win here.
