Fall Road Trip Visiting Oceanside California #beachlife #Oceanside #California

For the last few years my family and I have made it a tradition to take a road-trip to Southern California in the Fall. I grew up in Southern CA and love to see how its changed over the years. Each time we take the trip we make sure to experience a day at the beach. I enjoy searching for a different beach each year. The beach experience in the Fall is different than a Summer trip but just as fun. Last Fall the beach we selected was Oceanside CA.

Oceanside is located halfway between San Diego and Los Angeles. The beaches are beautiful and the people were so friendly! I like Oceanside since it was not as crowded as some of the bigger beaches. We played in the sand, the waves and even the cool play ground right on the beach.

The Oceanside Pier was our main focal point to visit. Growing up in Southern CA I have a love for piers and the activities all around them. Many families were fishing from the pier, beautiful sea birds were walking around and even a 50's style restaurant at the end of the pier. The pier is 1,954 feet long, extending about a quarter of a mile into the water making it one of the longest piers on the west coast.

The main street along the beach is called "The Strand". I honestly love the beach style of all the surfers with their boards, the tourists walking around and the beach cruiser bikes going by the local shops and restaurants. The Strand is 4 miles long and lined with palm trees. There are clean bathrooms and changing areas for swimmers or in the case of my kid wave jumping in his clothes.

We spent hours playing in the waves and sand. I could sit in the sand all day and watch my son with his big smile on his face jumping, splashing and getting covered in sand. I now know the joy my own Mom felt each summer when we went to the ocean.

For lunch we ate at The Tin Fish Restaurant on the Strand. I always have to get clam chowder in a bread bowl anytime I visit the beach. I loved every bite of it, when my son asked if he could feed the birds with part of my bread bowl I had to say no since I could not let the deliciousness be shared plus we should not feed wild animals.

After resting our bellies we decided to rent a surrey bike from Wheel Fun Rentals. I remember doing this as a kid with my family in Santa Barbara and wanted my own son to experience the fun of riding one by the ocean. I had more fun than I imagined I would. My husband did most of the pedaling on the bike and I was enjoying the view and giggles of my son. It was a perfect Fall day to be at the beach on a surrey bike. We rented ours a little later in the day saving us a bit of money of the rate.

The nice thing about Oceanside is the ability to use the beach even after dark. In the Fall it gets darker much earlier and we did not want our day of fun to stop. I went back to our car parked nearby to get a blanket to sit on and some snacks to watch the sunset over the ocean. We saw many families taking firewood to the cement fire pits on the beach and decided we were going to also have a bonfire. We had firewood in our trunk from a recent camping trip that was perfect for this. I was telling my husband how it was not good for gas mileage to have the wood in the trunk before we left on our trip and he replied with "You never know if we might need it on a road trip". He was so right and I was so glad to have it with us. Oh how I wished someone had been selling the stuff for s'mores on the beach!

Holiday Traveling Tips #kiaholidays

As the holidays approach and you start planning your holiday road trip to visit family and friends or a long awaited family vacation, there are so many planning details to keep in mind. When my family took a vacation this summer there was so much planning and so many details involved because we were taking a road trip. I knew it was going to be tough all those hours in the car with three small children, but I also knew that with plenty of snacks and entertainment we would eventually make it to our destination! Here are a few things I did and learned along the way and would like to share with you:

07 model, 08 model, 09 model, 10 model, 11 model, 12 model, 13 model, 2007 model, 2008 model, 2009 model, 2010 model, 2011 model, 2012 model, 2013, model, appraisal, appraisement, asking price, auto, automobile, build, buy kia, car dealer, dealership, design, drive, estimate, forte, forte koup,, fuel efficiency, fuel efficient, gas mileage, hybrid model, kia, kia auto, kia automobile, kia dealership, kia forte, kia forte koup, kia hybrid, kia koup, kia optima, kia optima hybrid, kia optima turbo, kia sales, kia sorento, kia soul, kia website, kia.com, koup, lease, list price, make, miles per gallon, mpg, optima, optima hybrid, optima turbo, price quote, price estimate, rebate, sorento, soul, test drive, vehicle, warranty, forte koup, k

1. Pack snacks, snacks and more snacks. I don't know about your kids but mine eat 24/7 and being stuck in the car is no different then being at home. In fact I was feeding them more food and snacks to keep them busy and happy on our long drive. I am kind of a freak about letting them eat in the car, the choking hazard and unease about not being able to get to them quick enough if they were choking if they did gives me anxiety. But I was able to find snacks and foods that eased my anxiety and the boys enjoyed the fun snacks.

2. Electronic gadgets and crayons are equally important! When on our road trip the boys enjoyed plenty of movies on their DVD players, if they are stuck in one place for hours why not let them watch a movie? Crayons, markers, coloring books and stickers are just as handy. To change things up they would color on paper as well as themselves, my 2 year old went to town on his body with the markers but at least he was entertained!

3. Stop at as many rest stops or parks as your time allows. The boys would start to get a little cranky and crazy after a couple of hours, when that would happen we pulled over and let them get out to stretch their legs. Getting their wiggles out and running around on the grassy area really helped out.

4. A comfortable vehicle is a must. Having a technology savvy car is a nice luxury to have and can really help out. It would have been nice to have a GPS, we would have used it more times then I can count! #kiaholidays

When I think about taking a road trip my first thought always goes to the first road trip my sister Laura and I took without our parents, our first grown up road trip. Our parents had moved to Washington right after Laura graduated high school, while my sister and I stayed behind in California to continue our own lives. About 6 months into them being gone we were having withdraws from not seeing our family, we missed them and thought it was a great way to see the great states of Oregon and Washington! So on a whim we decided to hop into my car, which happened to be a PURPLE Kia at the time, and headed out on our first road trip together. Before we headed out we called out parents to tell them we were on our way, this was before there were cell phones so we told them we would call them when we got to our next stop and a payphone. How funny is that to think about? No cell phones, must have been the dinosaur ages! Back to the start of our trip, we started out so confident in our decision to pack up the car and go. We played all the classic car games, like the License Plate Game, the Alphabet Game, the Going on a Picnic Game, you get the point, we played a lot of car games. We were singing to the radio and cassette player, hey I told you it was before everyone had cell phones. Things were going great until about 3 hours into our 12+ hour trip, I was starting to get really tired, I was starting to fade. At the time I was the only one out of the two of us that was driving, Laura was too scared to get behind the wheel of a car. So here I am only 3 hours into the drive and I felt exhausted. I felt like I couldn't keep my head up, like it was taking everything in my to stay awake, and it was only 2 pm!! Laura started to worry, she was pumping me full of red vines to stay awake, asking me questions, rolling down the windows, everything you could think of to keep a person awake. It worked but only temporarily. It was the weirdest thing that as soon as I would start to drive I would just fall asleep. Car Narcolepsy? The seats in my car were too comfortable?

We managed to make it 3 more hours and I needed a nap, a real uninterrupted nap. We pulled over to a rest stop, we were planning on driving all the way through so a hotel room was not in the budget. The sun was starting to set so it wasn't totally dark out. I turned off the ignition, tipped my chair back and went to sleep. Laura was freaked out by all of the people passing by so she hung up blankets and clothes in the windows to give us more privacy, we must have looked ridiculous!

An hour later we were back on the road, I was feeling refreshed (sort of) and we were getting back into the road trip groove. Flash forward 2 hours and here I was tired again, no energy, head bopping, car swerving tired. NOT AGAIN. We needed to gas up the Kia and by now it was dark and we were in the middle of nowhere. We finally found a gas station at a questionable turn off, in a questionable area. If anything was going to wake me up it would be the idea that there maybe some animal or God forbid person lurking in the bushes of this out-in-the middle-of-no-where-we-could-be-killed-by-a-serial-killer-at-any-moment gas station. Laura stood watch while I got out, swiped my card, put the gas pump in and jumped back in the car as fast as I could. Then we waited. While we waited for what felt like forever for the gas to pump we sat there in silence, listening to the dead of the night. The nozzle clicked, we both jumped. I thought about just driving away and letting the gas nozzle fall out as we took off and attach the gas cap later, no issues. That could happen right? Then I thought about my car and being a starving student, if something happened to the gas tank because I was being a chicken how would I pay for it? Darn it! I needed to buck up. Laura and I listened, looked around and I got out. When I was done I jumped back in and we took off, not looking back.

Needless to say I drove the rest of the way bug eyed, freaked out and thankful we were still alive. It's so funny to think about it now, I'm sure it wasn't as bad as we thought it was. I'm sure the road wasn't as long as it seemed. I'm sure there was someone working there watching the place making sure no serial killers were in the bushes. I'm sure it was a quiet little town and not a scene from Scooby Doo with zombies and ghosts around every corner. #kiasocialclub

Hotslings Review

                                   Hot Slings

When we decided to take our Road Trip this summer I was thinking about my then 6 month old baby girl and how to carrier her around even though she needed regular naps and knew that her brothers would want the stroller so she would need to be carried a lot. I wanted something that she could sit up in but also be easily transitioned into sleeping without disturbing her too much. A great solution was Hotslings, I have never had a "sling type" baby carrier and I wasn't sure how I would like it. I had my baby in the Hip Carry position, it was comfortable for me and she loved it. She could see out and it felt natural to me because on my hip is where she travels a lot on at home. My hands were free and to do other things while she just hung out. It was great. One thing that I did notice in the beginning was that my body seemed to overcompensate on the side she was not sitting on so it did put a bit of a strain on my body. But once I was aware of what I was doing I was able to fix it and it felt great!

Here is the AP Barely Square that I have and what Hotslings has to say about it-
Adjustable Pouches

Say bye bye to complicated sizing charts and hello to the infinitely adjustable Hotslings AP! Two strategically placed tri-glides allow the AP to fit comfortably on multiple users while also easily accommodating postpartum body changes.

Hotslings provide you with great instructions on different ways to carry your baby and the age appropriate positions, great for newbies like me. There are lots of great patterns to chose from and each comes with a matching diaper pouch for your on the go diaper needs! Cute! If you are looking for a Sling that is stylish and functional I suggest you check out Hotslings.

* I was not paid or compensated for this post. I was sent a free sling from Hotslings  for my review. The opinions are 100% mine and may vary from others.

Peak Auto Travel Tips and Wiper Review - Road Trip

One of the most important (if not the very most) things on a Road Trip your car. This is going to be the form of transportation that gets you from point A to point B. Because we live in Washington and because it does still rain here in the Summer windshield wipers are very important. It seems like we go through them quiet often on our vehicles, replacing them almost yearly it seems like. With Peak Auto we were able to get new wiper blades on our minivan before we started on our journey.

My husband easily installed the Peak Optix Flat Blades on our Dodge with literally a snap. The instructions inside showed each type and you picked the right piece according to what your wiper looks like. So easy and so simple. He snapped it out and snapped it in!

Taking off the old blade.
The simple pictured instructions.

Snapping the new blades on.

About the Peak Optix Flat Blade-
  • Curved design hugs windshield to provide clean wipe in any weather
  • Blade lengths range from 15"-28"
  • New EZSNAP™ Multiple Connector System covers 98% of vehicle fitments
  • Aerodynamic spoiler reduces wind lift
  • Frameless technology prevents ice and snow buildup.

Ten Summer Travel Car Care and Gas Saving Tips:
Before you get on the road
1.    Get a Check-Up: Having your vehicle regularly serviced by a trusted technician is essential year-round. However, bringing your car in for a check-up before you take off for vacation could help identify any problems before they surface on a long trip.

2.    Check Your Tires:  Dealing with a flat tire while you’re on vacation can ruin a trip so remember to have your tires checked. If they need to be replaced, it is crucial to have this done.

3.    Check Your Windshield Wipers: Properly functioning windshield wipers are a fundamental part of traveling long distances by car. Even if you’ve checked the forecast (which is highly recommended), weather is ultimately unpredictable; you never know what road conditions you might run in to. PEAK offers high quality Flat Wiper Blades that are durable, and the installation is quick and simple.

4.    Focus on Driving: Be sure to have activities, books or games along to keep your kids occupied so that you can focus all of your attention to the road.

5.    Don’t Forget Maps: Be prepared with maps – the old fashion kind. Electronics can malfunction and cell phones may lose their signal. Having a folding map along for the ride could prevent a disaster.

While you’re on the road
6.    Check Gas Levels: Always be aware of your gas level and where the next gas station is. If your tank drops below half-full and you’re not sure how far the next gas station is, save yourself the worry and fill up while you have the chance.

7.    Bring a Power Inverter: Carry a power inverter to keep your electronics charged – most importantly, your cell phone. It’s imperative to have a mobile device fully charged in the event of an emergency on the road. PEAK offers a 150 Watt Power Cup Inverter that fits into your vehicle’s cup holder and provides two power outlets and two USB plug-ins.

8.    An Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit handy. This kit should include flares and an emergency flashlight in the event that you have car trouble at night. It’s also important to have water, blankets, snacks, fresh batteries, a cell phone charger, a first aid kit and jumper cables. If you do have to jump start your car, PEAK’s portable power systems will do the work for you without the need of another vehicle.

Gas saving tips
9.    Make Sure Tires are Properly Inflated: Make sure tires are inflated to your car’s specifications, as underinflated tires will cause your car to waste gas. Specifications can be found on a sticker on the driver’s door or in a car manual.

10.  Use Cruise Control:  Anytime you can avoid breaking and accelerating, will save you gas.

PEAK Automotive Products are sold at more than 20,000 retail outlets in the U.S., including Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Advance Auto Parts, Pep Boys, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Sears, True Value Hardware, AutoZone and NAPA.

ErgoBaby Review and Giveaway - Road Trip

We knew we were going to be so busy on our Road Trip and always on the go, we knew a great baby carrier was a must! My preference for this trip was the carriers made by Ergobaby. It was so great knowing that while we were on the go we still were close to our little ones with our Ergobaby original baby carrier. Ergobaby was created and designed for mobility and comfort for the parent and child in mind. This allows parents to keep your baby close while bonding with your little one and continuing your life without limits.

Ashley and I waiting in the minivan for everyone else to get it together :)

Even at the end of a long day and into the evening we were still smiling!

The feeling and fit of the Original Carrier was great, my little one was snug as a bug the whole time whether she was awake soaking up all the fun or she was fast asleep while we enjoyed the sights on vacation. The Original Carrier was easy to snap, use and the neutral color of the Aussie Khaki "Outback" was a great choice so we could share the baby wearing duties. Not only did my 6 month old enjoy the ride, my 2 year old was just as happy to be toted around in the Ergobaby carrier. It can be worn in the front, back or hip position, and it supports babies up to 45 lbs. I wore it in the back like a backpack with my 2 year old son it in and life was good for both of us. Sometime strollers can be a hassle and many times too bulky, when you can "babywear" your little one it makes life a little easier. He loves to be close to us and to be held so this really left my hands free to do the many other things needed to be done throughout our time. Ergobaby also carriers a line of Carrier Accessories designed to make your baby carrying even easier and more convenient!

While the Ergobaby carriers are great for nice weather and vacations, I love the Lightweight Papoose Coat! This would really come in handy here in Washington and a few other places that get really cold as the weather changes.

Can't decide which Carrier you like best between the Original Carrier Collection, Sports Carrier Collection, Designer Collection , Organic Carrier Collection or any of the other Collections? Me either, they all have their purpose and would be a great choice!!  I just loved our vacation and loved having Ergobaby along for the ride!!

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Review #hosted

While vacationing in California we were lucky enough to go to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo/Northern California. Six Flags has so many fun rides but we were there to check out the New Superman Ultimate Flight ride. My boys are too young for the ride but that did not stop my husband and I. We love "real" roller coasters, not the ones that just spin around and around over and over again. The Superman Ultimate Flight was awesome! As our feet dangled down we flipped, twisted and turned all around while screaming and laughing. It was fun for the grown ups to feel like kids again and ride the rides. We love Superman around here so the little ones cheered us on from the ground!

Here we are at the ride!

So "super" are we in front of the ride.

The ALL Superman/Superhero gift shop right next to the ride!

There were lots of other shows and attractions we enjoyed. It was a busy day at Six Flags with lots of fun things to do. Here is a peek at the other attractions in pictures-

My husband and Liam enjoying the Aquarium and shark watching!

One of our favorite shows was the dolphins. There were six dolphins so it was action packed!
JJ and his cousin waiting in line for the Train.

Liam carefully watching the Tiger up close and personal.

If your in Northern CA or planning a visit we recommend taking your family to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for a whole day of fun.

You can buy your tickets online here and stay up to date on all things Six Flags by following them on Twitter and being a fan on Facebook.

Larkspur Landing Hotel Roseville CA Review

I told you about how excited we were to stay at the Larkspur Landing Hotel in Roseville CA in this post and now I just as excited to tell you about our stay! The hotel is beautiful with lots of great additions that made our stay so wonderful. The staff was very welcoming as warm. We stayed in the Executive Suite that has a separate bedroom and living room complete with 2 flat screen LCD TV's, one for us and one for the kids. Here is a peek at our stay in pictures-

The breakfast area, so cute!

Love the chalkboard menu.

The "Living Room" area with a desk.
Our Kitchen with appliances, dishware, cookware and silverware!

Our welcome basket, so sweet.

They weren't lying when they boast they have the finest linens. Their signature FeatherBorne®  Bed with high thread count sheets, a quilted down comforter, a premium duvet cover and a large selection of pillows was amazing!

My children had plenty of space to play and have fun. That was the central part of the Executive Suite that each "room" branched our from.

Me enjoying a cup of coffee out on the balcony, it was so beautiful and quiet. That was right off the bedroom so I was able to sneak out there before anyone else was awake!

The only bummer was that The Larkspur Hotel in Roseville does not have a pool, which my kids love. But as busy as we were on vacation, it did not seem to matter too much to us. If you are looking for a way to relax or unwind they do have a whirlpool spa and a fitness center. A great hotel that is family friendly and we will definitely be coming back.

You can learn more about Larkspur Hotels on Facebook and Twitter.

*I was not compensated for this post. We will be guest of the Larkspur Landing Hotel in Roseville on our Road Trip Summer Vacation Event.
